Steve Smulka moved to New York City in 1967 to attend The School of Visual Arts on a full scholarship. He majored in Fine Art but was heavily inspired by the photo-realist Chuck Close and many others with who he studied. He completed his education at the University of Massachusetts, where he received an MFA degree before returning to New York to continue his love of painting.
Steve had his first show at the Soho Center for Art in 1978 and has since exhibited his work regularly in New York, Santa Fe, Martha's Vineyard and London.
